Robin Dann's Cool Room: an oasis in Midtown

August 26 - September 19, 2003

Artist Statement:

I use painting, assemblage, multimedia and interactive installation to engage the viewer. I am interested in new and hybrid forms.

Currently, I am interested in tweaking the "educational exhibit" format toward my own subversive purposes, walking the line bewteen fact and fancy. I am equally fascinated by indulging in fabricated histories. I am always interested in feminist theories. Additionally I am involved in creating a bizarre series of characters with quirky souls that represent otherness. Part superhero, part side-show freak, they are easily laughed at; yet is it difficult to resist identifying with them.

A Brooklyn artist with a strong literary streak, I bleieve that concepts can be warm. I believe that art can be friendly and that play is serious business.

The room looked very little like this, as it was dark, and only lit with blacklights. The things written on the wall would glow under this light, and the room itself seemed to visually vibrate after a while.
